Background information on Manx Sports Aid Foundation

Who are we?

Manx Sports Aid was established in 1991 by the Isle of Man Sports Council. It is a registered charity (registration number 527) aiming to provide assistance to the top sports players on the Isle of Man, who have shown that they have the desire, ability and potential to compete not only on the island, but also at National, International and World Level.

How are we funded?

Funding comes through a number of sources. Our main sponsor is the Isle of Man Government who, through the Isle of Man Sports Council, provides an annual grant. We also have a number of companies who provide financial support – see sponsors page- and host an annual Golf Day which is also a valuable fund raiser. In 2006 we were also very fortunate to receive a large donation from Mr Albert Gubay and this has enabled us to set up the Gubay Fund for Sporting Excellence.

What do we do?

We select, in conjunction with the relevant sporting governing bodies, a number of athletes to support each year. We provide financial support and sports institute services to those athletes during the year. See the Isle of Man Institute of Sport page for more information.

Our Mission

Introduction:
To help us work more effectively with our stakeholders (e.g. supported athletes, potential athletes, coaches, sponsors, Institute personnel, etc) we have documented what we are about – what we seek to achieve, how we do this, some of our underlying values – and our criteria for support.

Our purpose:
To promote the Isle of Man and Isle of Man sport
Help support those who have the ability and potential to perform at a UK National or International standard
“To help the best be the best they can be”

Our beliefs and values:

  • We support young people first.
  • We believe that success at the top level in a sport will have a benefit for all levels of the sport and the Isle of Man in general.
  • We believe that achievement and success should be recognised in the local community.
  • We believe in fair play and sportsmanship i.e. no cheating.
  • Living on a small island should not be a barrier to sporting success.
  • Even in individual sports, success will be a team effort involving athletes, coaches, and athletes’ parents/spouses and support staff.
  • Sport is an important part of a healthy lifestyle.
  • Success in sport can be a key to success in life

How we go about this:

  • We provide direct financial help and other support through the IOM Institute of Sport.
  • We seek to work with others e.g. coaches, schools
  • We help to foster partnerships with others (e.g. sponsors, IOM and UK governing bodies, UK Sports Institutes)
  • We help athletes to manage distractions that can affect performance
  • We endeavour to support our athletes through the difficult times, for example during periods of illness and injury, as well as the good times.
  • We encourage all recipients to be ambassadors for themselves, their sport and the IOM.
  • We aim to develop creative and innovative solutions to help our athletes.
  • Our support staff within the Institute will seek continual self improvement so their skills and abilities match those they are supporting.
  • We promote our work and the achievements of our athletes.

Criteria for support:
Under most circumstances, applicants for support should fulfil at least one of the following criteria in addition to being ordinarily an Isle of Man resident:

  • A top fifteen World ranking at senior or junior level
  • A member of a Great Britain or Home Country squad at senior or junior level
  • A United Kingdom top ten ranking at senior or junior level
  • Membership of a World Class Programme or Academy through a UK Governing Body
  • Have realistic potential to reach professional level in their sport, e.g. cricket, rugby, or top amateur e.g. golf

Nominations for support are normally made on an annual basis and any applications must be endorsed by the Head of Performance for the relevant Governing Body.
